COUNTY JUDGES NEEDED: The state Supreme Court last week called for adding 25 judgeships across the state, including adding three county judges in Miami-Dade County. The Supreme Court each year goes through a process known as a “certification of need” for additional judges. It sends the recommendations to the Legislature, which decides whether to create judgeships. The Supreme Court last week certified a need for 13 circuit judges and 12 county judges. In 2024, the Supreme Court certified a need for an additional 23 circuit judges and 25 county judges. The Legislature this year approved 22 circuit judges and 15 county judges.
NEW AIRPORT BUILDING: County commissioners are being asked this week to award an $18.3 million contract to build a new 52,200-square-foot, two-story office building at Miami International Airport to relocate airport employees and tenants from a building that is to be torn down to make way for a cargo-handling facility. The contract would go to Winmar Construction Inc., which then would do its first work at the airport. The building is to be completed over 660 calendar days. It will have an employee cafeteria on the ground floor and also provide for future expansion of tenant space.
EXPANDING AIRPORT PARKING: As Miami International Airport prepares to open a new parking garage this month, county commissioners are being asked this week to approve a new agreement to manage and operate all airport garages. The additional garage, named Park 6, is under construction and will add to the garage management contract 2,240 more parking spaces and seven additional floors of oversight. The contract also covers the Dolphin and Flamingo garages and several other parking sites. The contract would pay Airport Parking Associates based in Miami Shores a management fee of almost $2.5 million for five years plus annual expenses of $12.1 million to operate the garages, which last year had gross revenues of $66.4 million. The management fee and proposed operating expenses represent 19% of projected gross airport parking revenue.
INTEREST-FREE HOME LOANS: A homeownership fair scheduled at the county’s main library at 101 W Flagler St. on Dec. 6 anticipates 450 to 500 persons attending, a memo from Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told county commissioners last month in a report on the progress of the County Homebuyer Downpayment Assistance Program. The program provides interest-free loans of up to $35,000 to help people cover the downpayment on their first home. The funds are available to individuals earning less than $121,520 or couples earning less than $138,740.
